On May 17, 2009, Obama gave the commencement address for nearly 2,900 graduates at Notre Dame University in South Bend, Indiana.
Before Obama even arrived on campus, however, protests and opposition to the president's appearance were mobilized, not only at Notre Dame, but among Catholics worldwide.
Those protesting contend that Obama's appearance at Notre Dame, the nation's leading Catholic university, is inappropriate due to his pro-choice stance on abortion as well as his support of stem cell research, both of which are strongly opposed by religious conservatives.
While I support the university's effort to keep an open mind by inviting Obama to give the commencement, I believe that though it should be an honor for the university to host the president, it is a shame that they should grant him an honorary degree.
Obama was greeted warmly during the ceremony, receiving a strong and sustained applause. He was only interrupted four times throughout his speech by hecklers.
Several students skipped their own graduation ceremony in protest of Obama, while other students wore crosses on their graduation gowns to show opposition to Obama instead of skipping graduation altogether.
As always, Obama's speech was a very strong performance, but we must remember that all Obama does is talk. As a gifted speaker he often delivers flowery speeches to cover up his true stance on the issues.
In his speech at Notre Dame, Obama urged that we find common ground in the debate over abortion. However, Obama's actions within his first few days in office prove that he doesn't really care about common ground. He has his agenda concerning abortion and stem cell research, and he is pushing his agenda forward as diligently as he can despite any opposition he faces.
For example, Obama has already reversed Bush's ban on embryonic stem cell research and has also lifted the ban on funding abortions for foreign families in the United States. And we can only be sure that Obama will continue his crusade to increase and grow abortion rights.
All of his progress, however, has been dampened by a recent poll by Gallup, which shows that a majority of Americans - 51 percent - are indeed pro-life.
Instead of leaving the abortion debate up to the politicians, we must return the decision to the states to decide whether or not they allow abortions. Each state must be able to vote on the issue. It is unfair for the debate to be decided on a national level, especially when the issue is seen differently in various areas of the countries. Obama must not force us to oblige to his unethical wants.
